OUR CENOTE’S NAME
Now, last but very much not least, let us tell you a little about our cenote’s special name:
“Tuuch” is a powerful word for Maya people, because it means “navel” and also “umbilical cord”.

Like many Native peoples, Maya people bury their babies’ umbilical cords in the land soon after they’re born. This connects their children to Mother Earth.

The “Tuuch” is buried near a cenote (the home of the rain deity); near a ceiba tree, or in the oldest part of the jungle. This is “so that the new child can be one with the forest, with the milpa, with…the water, the land, and the wind,” writes Yucateco Maya author Pedro Uc.

It’s beautiful to realize our cenote must have gotten its name from this ancestral ceremony. It was a special place to lay the cord of life for the many generations who walked here before us.

With this name, Cenote Tuuch is naturally a place of unity, of people to the Earth, to spirit, and community.

Come feel the connection for yourself. We are sure it’ll become your favorite cenote experience ever!
